FROM THE AUFA TREASURER

Two questions frequently asked by AUFA members are: “What is the mil rate?” and “How are membership dues spent?”  The answers are found below.

What is the Mil Rate?

The mil rate is the rate per thousand--the dues paid by each member per thousand dollars of gross salary.  It is calculated as the ratio of AUFA’s budget divided by the total salary base (the sum of gross salaries for all dues-paying members).  The mil rate, which must be approved by the membership on a yearly basis, was reduced from 10 (10l or 1%) in 2001/2002 to 9 (0.9%) for 2002/2003.

How Are Membership Dues Spent?

AUFA funds its operation entirely from dues paid by its members.  Investment income is fully reinvested for a rainy day.  The pie chart shows how membership dues are allocated among broad expense categories.  Of every dollar collected in dues, 38 cents go to national and provincial organizations (CAUT, ANSUT); 41 cents go to operate the office (salary, accounting, telephone, photocopying, postage and supplies), and 21 cents are available for other expenses (special projects, donations, travel, workshops and conferences).
