Professional Activities

CAUT Policy Statement

The employer should recognize that members of the academic staff have the right to engage in professional activities, paid or unpaid, as part of the member's regular employment duties and the exercise and maintenance of professional competence. These include but are not limited to participation in professional associations, academic staff associations, CAUT, labour organizations, and/or academic societies. Such professional activities do not constitute a form of outside employment, and should be in reasonable balance with the member’s other obligations, duties, and responsibilities as set out in the collective agreement.  The employer should pay for the cost of a member’s professional association dues where the employer requires that membership as a condition of employment.
